The roots of the German-Baltic Future Foundation go back to 1956. This year, for the first time, a community of Baltic Germans in Germany began to promote and support educational opportunities for young people with a German-Baltic background who come to Germany or already live there. This year also saw the start of fundraising through the establishment of the Birk Fund to provide interest-free loans to finance educational paths such as university studies or vocational training.
